CLIMATE WALK: A 5-day 92-kilometer-coal resistance march by almost a thousand of people whose voices are longing to be heard. Inspired by the struggles and hardships they experience prior to the event, the citizens from different places of Mindanao did a walk from Maranding to Kiwalan in order to shout out a resistance against the Coal-Fired Power Plants that are to be erected in Ozamiz City, Kauswagan, and Iligan City. Pointless to the eyes of many; however, this walk may be one of the most declarative eye- opener to the Mindanaons.

Most inspirations came from the people in the area of Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte. During the gathering on the day before the walk, some testimonies were expressed about the abusive deeds of the powerful people and the eligibility of the approval of said plant. These testimonies gave more ignitions to the fiery excitement of participants. Youth emphasized how their future is going to be sacrificed if the plants will be constructed as it has been known that illnesses caused by these hazards won’t be immediately visible.

There were four stops from Maranding to Kiwalan where the walkers stayed for the night- Tubod, Maigo, Kauswagan and Iligan. Local government units where the marchers passed received the request letter to make resolutions against coal fired power plants due to its negative impacts to people, environment and livelihood. Some of the provincial board members who met the climate walkers stated that the Sanggunianng Panlalawigan of Lanao del Norte has already approved a resolution cancelling the Environmental Compliance Certificate of GN Power for the coal-fired power plant which is already in the process of construction in Kauswagan.

On the way, the marchers met lots of thumbs up, smiles, waving flags and cheers. Some even purposely waited for them to pass by and gave them food and water. Mockers and outraged pro-coal individuals were also not avoided especially when the walkers reached the municipality of Kauswagan. Many questioned why many people from another places marched against the plant but it has been pointed out that the plants’ pollution could reach 35 to 45 kilometers thus municipalities, cities and other provinces enveloped could not escape from its rage.

Marchers, along with their respective organizations promised to continue the true walk on protecting the environment for the present and future generations. More and more steps are expected to come up.
